What Changed on Gun Barrel City's West Main This Summer

August 6, 2026

If you have lived on this side of Cedar Creek Lake for any real length of time, you already know the rhythm. Lake days set the pace, and West Main is the strip you cut through on the way to somewhere else. That is quietly shifting in 2026. Two openings on the same road, both filed with the state within weeks of each other, are turning the everyday-errand corridor into something you can actually plan a Saturday around without leaving the city limits.

This is not a new-restaurant roundup. It is a note about what those two addresses do to the loop you already run between the boat ramp, the pantry, and the porch.

The Two Addresses That Rewrote the Block

The first sits at 317 West Main. HTeaO opened its Gun Barrel City location on Saturday, March 14, 2026, owned and operated by franchise partners Kristen and Jeremy Brown. If you passed the drive-thru line the weekend it opened, you saw the point of the store immediately. It is built for the cooler run, not the sit-down.

Kristen Brown put it plainly in the opening announcement:

This town has such a strong mix of full-time residents and families who spend their weekends at the lake, and we loved the idea of creating a place that complements that lifestyle. Packing your cooler with snacks and refreshing drinks is a staple of the lake experience.

That is the tell. A twenty-flavor tea wall with drive-thru service, sited on the retail spine, is a bet on the Friday-afternoon-before-the-lake window. Not the tourist window. The resident window.

The second address is 938 West Main, six-tenths of a mile east, and it is the more interesting story. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation project page lists the job under ID TABS2026015590 and describes remodeling of an existing restaurant to accommodate a new tenant for a 2,797-square-foot space with an estimated cost of $300,000, with a March 30 start and a July 3 completion goal. That tenant is Soulman's Bar-B-Que, and the space is the shuttered Whataburger.

Soulman's is bringing its signature Texas barbecue to Gun Barrel City in what the company calls its southernmost expansion to date, renovating a nearly 2,800-square-foot space with a projected summer opening. It will be the chain's 22nd location.

Why the Whataburger Corner Matters More Than the Square Footage Suggests

For years, that corner was the default. Late practice pickups, boat-trailer stops, the pre-Canton drive. When Whataburger left, the drive-thru anchor left with it, and the block lost a piece of its weekly muscle memory. A barbecue joint is a different animal, but it lands into the same slot.

The scale of the bet is worth naming. This is Soulman's fifth East Texas location, alongside Mabank, Quinlan, Van, and Sulphur Springs. That means the closest Soulman's has been sitting about seven miles across the causeway in Mabank. Locals who wanted brisket without a drive already had a workaround. What is new is that the workaround is now on the same road as the grocery run.

The company is a Pleasant Grove original that has been at this since 1974, and has grown from a neighborhood barbecue joint into a regional operator with more than 20 locations while sticking to low-and-slow, hickory-smoked cooking. That matters less as trivia and more as a signal of how the operator underwrites the site. The Gun Barrel City build is a permanent kitchen, not a pop-up, and the landlord on the TDLR filing, Hallett No. I LP, ties directly back to the founding family. Read that as a long-hold investment on a corner that had been dark.

Where They Slot Into the Week

Here is the loop the two openings actually change, mapped along the same three miles of West Main you already drive:

  • 317 W. Main, HTeaO. Drive-thru cooler stop. Works for the Friday-morning pack for the boat, or the after-school pickup that used to require a Sonic detour.
  • 938 W. Main, Soulman's Bar-B-Que. Post-lake dinner without the drive to Mabank, once the July target holds. The drive-thru footprint carries over from the Whataburger build, which means a to-go rack of ribs is realistic on a night you do not want to hose off first.
  • Elsewhere on the lake side, Fig's Steakhouse. Still the sit-down. Fig's Steakhouse is a venture from Greg Figueroa, CEO and Founder of Melinda's Hot Sauce and Fig & Parsley General Store, and the Fig & Parsley General Store has been Cedar Creek Lake's go-to destination for live music, food, and drinks. If Soulman's is the Tuesday plate, Fig's is the anniversary.
  • The Dock Restaurant & Bar and Lake Jackson Seafood. The lake-adjacent options that already appear on the current Yelp top-ten for the 75156 ZIP, alongside Elements By 456, Sharkies Smashburgers Cedar Creek, Cochran's Cafeteria, BnR Country, and Hector's. Neither is going anywhere, and both still hold the water view.

The West Main additions are not competing with the lake spots. They are filling the weeknight gap between them.

The Lake Calendar That Still Sets the Tempo

None of this replaces the calendar you already run against. It just gives you more room inside it.

Gun Barrel City holds two festivals each year, the July 4th Festival and the Christmas Festival. That is the city's own framing, and it is worth taking at face value. Everything else keys off those two dates.

JulyFest itself now has a permanent home. The 2026 edition runs at Gun Barrel City Park at 301 Municipal Drive, gates at 5:00 PM, with live music, a VIP experience, a kid zone, and food trucks on the shores of Cedar Creek Lake. Past lineups have brought Randy Rogers Band, C&C Music Factory, and Parker McCollum to the park. If you live in the city, you know the park lot fills. Plan the food run at HTeaO or Soulman's on the way in, not after gates.

Then there is the airshow. Thunder Over Cedar Creek Lake pulled over 40,000 people to last year's show, remains the only airshow in the Southwest held over water, and puts planes as low as 500 feet above the reservoir. It typically lands on Fourth of July weekend. The show is a fundraiser for the Cedar Creek Veterans Foundation, which raises money to assist wounded, injured, and disabled military personnel and veterans in Northeast Texas. If you host guests for the weekend, that is the anchor. Everything else is a supporting act.

The Lake, By the Numbers Locals Actually Use

A quick refresh, because the reservoir dictates traffic patterns more than any road project does. Cedar Creek Reservoir was completed in 1965 as a water source for Fort Worth and other North Texas communities, runs about 18 miles long and just over 2 miles wide, has just over 220 miles of shoreline, hits a maximum depth of 62 feet, and includes three islands managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife as Wildlife Management Areas for aquatic birds. The current lake level is worth pulling from the United States Geological Survey site the city itself links to before any launch day.

Two hundred twenty miles of shoreline is the number to hold onto. It is why West Main can pull double duty as an errand strip and a lake corridor at the same time. The lake is long enough that the retail spine on the eastern shore never really goes off-season.

A Short Reference for the Rest of Summer

  1. HTeaO, 317 W. Main. Open now. Drive-thru is the point.
  2. Soulman's Bar-B-Que, 938 W. Main. Construction scheduled through a July 3 target finish, with a summer opening projected by the company. Watch for a ribbon cutting through the Cedar Creek Lake Area Chamber if the Mabank pattern holds.
  3. JulyFest, Gun Barrel City Park, 301 Municipal Drive. Gates 5:00 PM. Park early.
  4. Thunder Over Cedar Creek Lake. Fourth of July weekend, over the water. Best seats are on a boat or on the shore facing the reservoir.
  5. Christmas Festival. The other city-recognized anchor. Enough said for now.

The shorter version of all this: the corridor you already drive is doing more work in 2026 than it did in 2025. Two operators put real capital on West Main this year, both close to full-time residents, and neither one is asking you to change how you use the lake. They are asking you to spend a few more of your weeknight dollars inside the city.
