Kaufman is the county seat, and the market reflects it: a historic core around the courthouse square, established neighborhoods on the streets running off it, and a steady supply of acreage tracts on the roads leading out of town. An in-town historic home and a ten-acre tract can trade in the same week here at comparable numbers, which is not true of most of the county.

US-175 has pulled growth this direction, and new construction has followed, but Kaufman has not turned over the way Forney has. That is part of the appeal for buyers who want land, outbuildings or the ability to keep animals without driving considerably further east.
